DNA Linked To Missing Woman Discovered

Durham Regional Police have confirmed that DNA linked to a missing woman has been discovered on a property in Oshawa, where the remains of teenager Rori Hache were found last December. Kandis Fitzpatrick has been missing since 2008; she was 18 years old when she disappeared. Police said yesterday her DNA was found at the basement apartment at 19 McMillan Dr. Hache's torso was found in the waters of the Oshawa Harbour on September 11th of last year. On January 4th, Adam Strong was charged with interference with a dead body. The charges against him have not been proven. Hache's remains were identified after a search warrant on the property was extended. The DNA from Fitzpatrick was found in April, and confirmed after DNA samples were obtained from her biological parents. 

Fatal Collision on Highway 407

A 38-year old motorcyclist from Pickering is dead following a collision on westbound Highway 407 near Brock Rd. According to police, two dump trucks were exiting the highway and entering a construction zone when the motorcyclist struck one of the vehicles around 7:30am yesterday. When emergency vehicles arrived on scene, the driver was found without vital signs. The highway remained closed until noon for the investigation.

Car Vandals Sought

An investigation is underway after more than 60 tires were slashed in a neighbourhod in Whitby. Police say at least 18 vehicles were affected in the area of Garrard Rd. and Dryden Blvd. The incidents occured late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Anyone with information is asked to call Durham Regional Police or CrimeStoppers.

Alzheimer's Workshop In Uxbridge

An important information session is coming to Uxbridge Saturday. The Alzheimer's Society of Durham is offering a full day workshop for care partners of persons with dementia. Denyse Newton, the Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Society of Durham Region, says the information workshop can provide some vital information for those dealing with family and friends who are experiencing dementia. The session includes lunch and refreshments, and runs from 10am-4pm tomorrow at Douglas Crossing Retirement Home, 6 Douglas Rd. in Uxbridge.

Fatal Collision In Oshawa

A truck driver is dead following a crash on the eastbound 401 past Harmony Rd. The incident occurred Tuesday morning just before 5:30am. OPP say the tractor trailer left the highway and traveled along a ditch before striking a tree. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Suspects Wanted After Alleged Attack on Man In Wheelchair

Police are on the lookout for a pair of suspects following an attack on a man in a wheelchair. The incident occurred Sunday night in Oshawa around 11pm on a bike path near Wentworth St. Two women are at large; one of them allegedly struck the 50-year old man in the head causing a serious injury that required hospitalization. Humidex Values Reaching 43 Are Expected

No relief from the heat is expected anytime soon as we head through the first week of July. South Durham Region and the surrounding area remain under a Heat Warning which will likely remain in place until at least Friday. Environment Canada is calling it the most significant heat event of the past few years. 

Greenbank Airport Dispute Continues

Two lawsuits with the Greenbank Airport involving civil damages and a counter claim by the Township of Scugog have now been consolidated into one lawsuit to be tried in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The Township of Scugog and Greenbank continue legal discussions regarding the airport development and environmental mitigation of the existing fill deposited on the site. Council has directed the Township lawyer and staff to continue with legal action. There is no word yet on a date for the Superior Court of Justice trial.

RibFest Shooting Suspect Identified

Durham Regional Police have confirmed that one suspect from Ajax has now been charged in connection with a shooting at RibFest in Pickering that injured four people earlier this month. 20-year old Ahyjay Francis-Simms of Epps Crescent faces four counts of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, discharging a firearm with intent, possession of a firearm obtained by crime, carrying a firearm while prohibited, and breach of recognizance. Witnesses say at least eight shots were fired at Esplanade Park as the event was wrapping up on Saturday June 2nd. The victims, two men and two teenage boys, all suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to hospital. Police say they believe it was not a random act. Francis-Simms appeared in bail court yesterday morning. The charges against him have not been proven.   

Heat Wave On The Way

Scorching temperatures are expected for the Canada Day weekend, and a Special Weather Statement has been issued by Environment Canada. Daytime highs starting on Friday are expected in the low-to-mid 30's, with humidex readings possibly into the mid 40's. It is expected to be the most significant heat event of the season so far.
