Water Restrictions Ahead In Scugog

The Regional Municipality of Durham is advising residents of mandatory water restrictions that will be coming into effect starting September 5th in Port Perry. Staff will be performing maintenance work on the water tower until mid-November, and the restrictions will apply to all non-residential outdoor water use, ensuring that adequate water levels remain to deal with potential emergencies. Residents and businesses will be asked to refrain from lawn watering, cleaning driveways and decks, and washing cars during this time.  

Camp To Be Built For Asylum Seekers

A surge of asylum seekers crossing the Canada-US border in Quebec has prompted the Canadian military to build a camp with tents that will accommodate up to 500 people. The Armed Forces confirmed in a statement yesterday that the shelters will be equipped with floors, lighting, and heating. The camp will be situated on a converted, private campsite near a Canada Border Services Agency processing centre. A spokesperson said that there are currently 700 people waiting to be processed who have crossed at that location alone.

Dead Animals Found In Pickering

Durham Regional Police are investigating reports of a number of decapitated animals found in Pickering. The remains of a goat and several chickens were spotted late Monday night by passersby near Beachpoint Promenade at West Shore Boulevard. Police say animal services were contacted after the dead livestock were found. So far there are no leads as to who left the animals there or why. Authorities say the discovery is being treated as suspicious.

Cyclist Succumbs To Her Injuries

A 26-year old cyclist who was struck by a vehicle in Oshawa has succumbed to her injuries. Emily Shields was riding in the area of Adelaide Av. and Blackthorn St. on Friday morning when she was hit by a black Ford Crown Victoria sedan. The 32-year old driver remained on scene. Shields was air-lifted to a trauma centre in Toronto and put on life support. She was pronounced dead later in the day. Police are looking for details about a second vehicle which may have been directly or indirectly involved in the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call the Durham Region Traffic Services Branch.   

Deadly Crash in Port Hope

A deadly, overnight crash in Port Hope resulted in a fire that engulfed three vehicles and killed two people last night. The incident occurred at around 10:15pm just east of the County Rd. 28 exit, when a transport truck rammed into two vehicles. The collision resulted in a full closure of the 401 eastbound and westbound lanes overnight between Toronto Rd. and Burnham St. in Cobourg. The OPP's Technical Traffic Collision Investigators were on scene through the early hours of the morning. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. 

Theriault Brothers Appear In Court

Toronto Police Officer Michael Theriault and his brother Christian appeared in court for the first time yesterday. The two men are accused of assaulting Whitby teen Dafonte Miller on December 28, 2016. Miller's lawyer alleges he was left with broken bones and injuries that will require the removal of his left eye. Michael Theriault was off-duty at the time of the incident; he and his brother were arrested in late July. A judge approved new terms of release for the two men yesterday; they are no longer subject to an overnight curfew or prohibited from drinking alcohol. Theriault has been suspended with pay while he awaits trial. None of the allegations against the men have been proven in court. 

Stunt Racers Nabbed In Courtice

Two drivers have been charged after racing on Highway 2 yesterday, east of Centerfield Drive. 26-year old Terrell Carwley and 30-year old Bryan Wright were clocked at more than double the 60 km/h speed limit, driving side-by-side at 149 km/h when they were stopped by police. They were charged with stunt driving and speeding, and were issued appearance notices for the offences.

US President Donald Trump's new White House Communications Director has been fired after just eleven days on the job. Anthony Scaramucci was forced out yesterday following a series of turbulent media appearances. Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders issued a statement saying "Mr. Scaramucci felt it was best to give Chief of Staff John Kelly a clean slate and the ability to build his own team. We wish him all the best." 

Motorcyclist Struck In Oshawa

Another collision involving a motorcyclist occurred on our roads over the weekend. One person is facing careless driving charges after an incident in Oshawa Saturday evening. The accident happened just before 8pm near John St. and Simcoe St. S. The motorcycle driver suffered leg injuries and was taken to hospital. Police say he is in stable condition.
