Marijuana Snack Concerns
Posted by Samantha Casais on 5/23/2018 7:16:00 AM.
Durham Regional Police are concerned after two reported incidents involving kids consuming marijuana-laced snacks at an Oshawa elementary school. On May 14, a Grade 6 student brought home-baked cookies to school as a treat; after eating the cookies, four students reported feeling dizzy and euphoric. Officers found that the parent had made the cookies for a spouse, who had a medical marijuana license. The child's sibling had taken the cookies without permission, but they ended up in the Grade 6 student's backpack. In a separate incident, police say THC-infused gummy bears were eaten by four kids in the school. Those kids were between the ages of 12 and 13. Police say it's not clear how the students got the gummy bears, but they were not made at home. Officers are warning teachers, students, and parents about the dangers of consuming psychoactive chemicals at a young age.

Durham Regional Police have issued a warning to residents in Ajax after a bear was spotted early Sunday morning. Two calls came in around 3:30am reporting a spotting of the bear near Audley Rd. N. and Rossland Rd. E., then again on Arfield Av., which is in a residential neighbourhood. Although bears usually avoid humans, they do occasionally migrate to rural and even urban areas to get food. Bear attacks are rare, but residents are advised not to approach the bear if spotted, and to put away outdoor pet food and bird feeders during the spring; also to keep garbage indoors until the morning of scheduled pickup.

The Township of Uxbridge has a new mayor. Pat Malloy, a frequent guest on the Morning Den, was sworn in to the position after a unanimous vote by four council members. Malloy, the sitting councilor for Ward 2, and councilor Dave Barton abstained from the vote, declaring conflicts of interest. The chair was vacated when outgoing mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor was sworn in as Regional Chair last month. Malloy thanked councilors for their confidence, saying he's looking forward to getting to work. Among his priorities are the Brock St. culvert, redevelopment of the Fields of Uxbridge, and a new animal shelter for Uxbridge-Scugog.
